Well, imagine if stealing your identity could include stealing your image. And if scammers could then use that image to put words in your mouth and – in some cases – fake your very actions. This isn’t just some outlandish thought experiment, but a foreseeable hazard if we fail to prepare for a surge in the production of “deepfakes”.
Though the technology isn’t there yet, there is clearly an as-yet-ill-defined movement to use the vast and complex swathes of data we generate to digitally replicate and extend our presence – even to the point of extrapolating what we would’ve said, thought or done particular scenarios.
Might they replace humans in commercials, or even in the classroom? Would you have one read your kids a bedtime story? Could they model clothes without tripping up on virtual runways, or host the next online conference you attend without a hitch?
It is important to ask at this nascent stage: should your descendants be able to assent to your deepfake resurrection?
